Updated: Apr 6, 2023

During the holiday season, seniors may experience feelings of loneliness or sadness due to missing out on holiday events and family gatherings. Here are some ways to help seniors with the holiday blues.

Reach out and connect with them: Make sure to reach out during the holidays and stay in touch with them. Send them cards, make phone calls, or set up video chat sessions to stay connected and let them know that they are not alone.

Offer to help with shopping and errands: Offer to help with tasks like grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, and other errands to make life easier for them.

Create holiday memories: Create special holiday memories by doing activities like baking, decorating the home, or watching holiday movies together.

Plan meaningful activities: Plan activities that they can look forward to and enjoy. This can be anything from attending a holiday concert or volunteering at a local event to something as simple as taking a stroll around the neighborhood to enjoy the holiday decorations.

Keep them connected to the community: Help them stay connected to the community by arranging virtual events or attending those in person. This will give them the opportunity to interact with others and feel a sense of community.

Providing opportunities for seniors to feel included and valued during the holiday season is critical, mainly if they cannot participate fully due to health or other limitations. Consider reaching out to local senior community organizations or city recreation community services to explore options for connecting seniors with others and promoting a sense of belonging.
